What Oracle Primavera P6 was built for

Primavera P6 is a scheduling system for large projects. It comes from plant construction, EPC work, building and infrastructure – fields in which a single undertaking runs for years, reaches very high activity counts and where the schedule itself can be a contractual deliverable. The methodology is correspondingly deep: critical path method, several calendars side by side, finely grained work breakdown structures, plus cost and progress control down to the individual activity.

P6 comes in two forms: P6 Professional as a desktop client for the scheduling work itself, and P6 EPPM as a web-based environment for portfolio, reporting and collaboration. Both are meant for organisations in which scheduling is a role of its own. That is exactly where the break line sits for mid-sized mechanical and plant engineering: the role usually does not exist there – and the bottleneck is not the depth of a single plan but the coordination between twenty projects and six departments.

In practice

Where it breaks in mid-sized industry

The following five points are not a list of shortcomings. They describe what happens when a tool built for large projects is used in an organisation that runs many mid-sized projects at once and has no planning department of its own.

  1. Planning becomes a discipline in itself. The methodology behind P6 only pays off once someone truly masters it. In practice that turns into a full-time role: a scheduler who maintains structures, calendars, codes and layouts. If that role changes hands or is absent, planning comes to a halt.
  2. Departments do not work in the system themselves. Engineering, production and assembly report their status upward instead of entering it. That path runs through meetings, lists and e-mails – and every update has to be transferred by one person before it becomes visible in the plan.
  3. The level of detail exceeds what is actually known. An activity network at P6 level assumes that durations and dependencies are known to that precision. In engineer-to-order business many of them are not settled at planning time; the plan then becomes more precise than the available knowledge justifies.
  4. The capacity question stays an extra task. P6 can manage resources. The everyday question in mid-sized industry, though, is this: is engineering overbooked in March across all projects? Answering it assumes every project is resourced with equal discipline – maintenance effort that again rests on the same role.
  5. Operations and roles demand attention of their own. Whether P6 Professional on the desktop or P6 EPPM in the browser: permissions, calendars, codes and layouts need administering. Where a PMO exists, that is solved. Where none exists, it becomes a side job for someone whose actual task is running projects.

None of this is a flaw in P6. It follows from using a tool made for contractually owed schedules on large projects to steer many mid-sized ones. The scheduling depth row matters most. Linetrack calculates task relationships, derives the critical path from them and lets a shift ripple through the chain of dependent tasks, visible immediately in the Gantt bar chart. What P6 offers beyond that is the depth of the methodology: multiple calendars, finely grained work breakdown structures and the formal schedule analytics required for contractual proof. Honest boundaries

When Primavera remains the right choice

There are situations in which Linetrack is the wrong answer. Four of them can be named plainly – without qualification and without a counter-argument.

  1. EPC and large plant projects. A single undertaking with a very high activity count, a multi-year runtime and a schedule that is itself an object of project control. P6 covers that depth, Linetrack does not.
  2. The schedule is a contractual deliverable. Public clients, oil and gas, major infrastructure programmes: where the contract demands P6 schedules in a defined format and reporting rhythm, the tool question is already answered.
  3. Claims management and forensic delay analysis. Anyone who has to formally justify time extensions, substantiate variations or reconstruct the causes of delay after the fact needs the claims and delay-analysis methodology of P6. Linetrack is not built for that.
  4. An established P6 operation with its own scheduler role. Where a planning department exists, the methodology is in place and processes are built around it, switching solves no problem – it removes a working foundation.

In every other case – several departments, many parallel projects of medium size, no dedicated planning role – the question is not depth against depth but whether the plan stays current. That is the central question of multi-project management. Organisationally the two do not exclude each other: needing P6 for one large project does not mean the rest of the portfolio has to be run there as well.

Switching over

How the switch from Primavera works

Importing existing Primavera schedules is a ready-made standard feature of Linetrack and part of the product: tasks, durations and dependencies are carried over instead of being retyped. No separate interface development is required for it, which takes the legacy schedules off the list of arguments against switching.

The qualification belongs with it: this import is a data migration, not a running synchronisation between the two systems. What Linetrack keeps permanently in sync is ERP, time-tracking and HR data; which systems those are in detail, and how they are connected, is listed under interfaces and integrations.

After that it is not the import that counts but the first plan of your own. For EPC megaprojects with a contractually required schedule, for claims management and for forensic delay analysis, P6 remains superior. Linetrack does not reach that analytical depth and does not claim to.

Can Linetrack take over existing Primavera schedules?

When is Primavera P6 oversized for a mid-sized company?

Whenever planning turns into a discipline of its own as a result. The typical pattern: a full-time scheduler maintains the plans, departments report their status upward instead of entering it themselves, and the plan is only as current as the last piece of input. Without a contractual requirement on the plan format, that effort rarely earns a matching return in mid-sized industry. What does Linetrack cost compared with Primavera P6?

Linetrack does not comment on Oracle's licence costs – they depend on the edition and the contract, and they change. For Linetrack the figure is: from 10 € per user and month, modular by number of users, roles and the functional modules booked. A planning simulation before the decision is free of charge, and suppliers receive a free collaboration licence.
